Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 25, 2026

This Privacy Policy explains what LoopLingua ("we", "us", "our") collects about you, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. By using looplingua.com or our browser extension you agree to this policy.

1. Information we collect

Account information

When you create an account, our authentication provider (Clerk) collects your email address, name (if provided), and authentication credentials. If you sign in with Google, your Google profile name and email are shared with us through OAuth. Passwords, if used, are stored and handled by Clerk and never seen by LoopLingua.

Payment information

Paid subscriptions are processed by Stripe. Stripe receives your payment card or other billing details directly. LoopLingua does not store full card numbers. We receive a Stripe customer ID, your subscription status, and the plan tier so we can enable paid features.

Content you create

When you generate a phrase, we send your input text to OpenAI for translation and to Google Cloud Text-to-Speech for audio generation. We store your generated phrases (text, audio, target language, difficulty level) in our database so you can access them in your Looplists. You can delete saved phrases at any time from your account.

Usage data

We track how many generations you've used in the current month (against your plan limit), which language you most recently used, and your current plan tier. We do not log the content of your generated phrases for analytics, only counts.

Product analytics and session recording

We use PostHog to understand how LoopLingua is used. It captures page views and a defined set of product events (for example, selecting a language, starting a generation, or completing signup), and records session replays, playbacks of how visitors interact with the pages (clicks, navigation, and the content displayed), which we review internally to fix problems and improve usability. This applies to anonymous visitors of the free tool as well; for those, the data is tied only to a randomly generated identifier, and a profile linked to your account is created only if you sign up. PostHog runs only after you accept cookies (see "Your cookie choices"). PostHog's processing is governed by its privacy policy.

Anonymous free-try data

If you use the free tool without signing in, we record a hashed version of your IP address, the language you selected, and a hash of your phrase. This is used solely to enforce our anti-abuse limits (a small number of free generations per IP per day) and to serve cached results when the same phrase is requested again. We do not retain the raw IP address, and we do not link this data to any account unless you later sign up.

Cookies and similar technologies

We use a small number of cookies:

  • Authentication cookies (set by Clerk) keep you signed in.
  • Stripe cookies are set during checkout for fraud prevention.
  • Free-try cookie (ll_free_used) is a small counter that tracks free trial use on our free-try page.
  • Preference cookies store your language preference and similar UI settings locally in your browser (no server-side storage).
  • Analytics cookies from Google Analytics and PostHog (non-essential) help us understand how the site and product are used. Google Analytics and Google Ads load on every visit but, using Google Consent Mode, set no cookies and use no data for analytics or advertising until you accept; if you decline, only anonymous, cookieless signals are sent. PostHog loads only after you accept. PostHog also stores an identifier used for session replays (see "Product analytics and session recording" above). Vercel Web Analytics is cookieless and anonymized, and runs without cookies.

Your cookie choices

When you first visit, a banner lets you accept or reject non-essential cookies (Google Analytics, Google Ads, and PostHog). PostHog doesn't load and captures nothing until you accept. Google Analytics and Google Ads load in a consent-aware mode: they store no cookies and use no data for advertising until you accept, and send only anonymous, cookieless signals if you decline. You can change your choice at any time from the "Cookie settings" link in the footer. Essential cookies (authentication, checkout fraud-prevention, and the free-try counter) are always active because the service can't function without them.

Bot protection (Cloudflare Turnstile)

We use Cloudflare Turnstile on our free-try page to distinguish humans from automated traffic and protect our service from abuse. Cloudflare may collect data such as your IP address, browser characteristics, and interaction signals to perform this check. Cloudflare's processing of this data is governed by the Cloudflare Turnstile Privacy Addendum.

2. Browser extension

This policy also covers the LoopLingua browser extension. The extension adds learning subtitles to videos on supported sites (currently YouTube) and lets you save sentences to your LoopLingua account.

What the extension processes. When you turn the overlay on for a video, the extension reads that video's identifier and its caption text in order to display subtitles, reading aids (such as pinyin or other pronunciation guides), and dictionary definitions. Dictionary lookups happen entirely on your device. If your plan includes automatic translation, the video identifier and caption text are sent to our servers, translated (via OpenAI, as described above), and cached by video identifier so the same video never needs to be translated twice. We meter translation use against your plan's fair-use limit.

What happens when you save a sentence. The sentence text, its language, and its source video are stored in your account, and audio is generated for it exactly as described in "Content you create." Saved sentences count toward your plan's generation limits and can be deleted at any time.

What the extension does not do. When the overlay is off, the extension collects nothing. It does not track your browsing history, does not read pages other than the video you activate it on, and contains no analytics, advertising, or session-recording code. Signing in to the extension uses Clerk, as described above.

3. How we use information

  • To provide the service: generate translations and audio, save your phrases, manage your account and plan.
  • To process payments and prevent fraud.
  • To enforce usage limits and prevent abuse of free tiers.
  • To improve the product, fix bugs, and understand which features are used (in aggregate).
  • To respond to support requests and communicate about your account.

4. Who we share information with

We share data only with the service providers that make LoopLingua work:

  • Clerk: authentication and account management.
  • Stripe: payments and subscription management.
  • Supabase: database hosting (your saved phrases, usage records).
  • Vercel: application hosting and analytics.
  • OpenAI: translation of input text. Subject to OpenAI's API data-use policy (API inputs are not used to train OpenAI's models by default).
  • Google Cloud Text-to-Speech: voice synthesis of generated text.
  • Cloudflare: Turnstile bot protection on the free-try page.
  • Google Analytics: aggregate usage analytics.
  • Google Ads: advertising measurement and conversion tracking (consent-aware; cookieless when you decline).
  • PostHog: product analytics and session replay (only after you accept cookies). Subject to PostHog's privacy policy.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for advertising targeting or to build profiles of you across other sites. The only advertising-related use is measuring the performance of our own ads through Google Ads, in the consent-aware way described above. We may disclose information if required by law (for example, in response to a valid subpoena).

5. Data retention

  • Account and saved-phrase data: retained as long as your account is active. You can delete your account at any time by emailing us.
  • Anonymous free-try records: retained for up to 30 days, then deleted.
  • Payment records: retained as required by tax and accounting law (typically 7 years).

6. Your rights

You have the right to access, correct, or delete the personal data we hold about you. If you're in the EU/EEA or UK, you also have the right to object to certain processing and to data portability. If you're in California, you have rights under the CCPA, including the right to know what we collect and to request deletion. To exercise any of these rights, email hello@looplingua.com.

7. International data transfers

LoopLingua is operated from the United States. Our service providers may process data in the US and other countries. If you use the service from outside the US, your information may be transferred to and processed in the US.

8. Security

We use industry-standard practices to protect your data: HTTPS for all traffic, encrypted storage at rest, authentication tokens with short lifetimes, and the principle of least privilege for service-provider credentials. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we work hard to protect your information.

9. Children

LoopLingua is not directed to children under 13 (or under 16 in the EU). We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe we have inadvertently collected such data, please contact us and we will delete it.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we'll update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. For material changes, we'll also notify signed-in users by email or an in-app notice.
